Health update – Is it too late to say Happy New Year?

Hello! How are you? This my first post of the new year as I like to ponder on it for a while and honestly, 2019 started as busy as 2018 ended!

I thought I’d write a little update on how well I’m doing. I’m happy to report, I am still completely relapse-free!! All I can say is ‘Long may it continue!’ It has honesty taken all this time for me to really believe that the therapy could work long-term and daring to hope that I will get a few years before my next relapse.

Of course, I am still reminded all the time of my new normal. I have now got used to a small amount of numbness that I still have in my left hand, I am still a slow and stumbely walker, I wear out quick, still struggle to run and I have to make sure I look after my stress levels.

The latter applies to us all and in a way I am lucky that my body sends me a very clear signal when I’m over-doing it. I had a real wobble in the pre-Christmas madness in December. After a day of rushing about on errands and too much going on in my head, I crashed. And it was terrifying. I was so close to getting ill again, I could physically feel it in my whole body. I followed the next couple of days with really, mindfully chilling out and letting go of the to-do-list. Phew, I got away with it!

Dealing, or not, with overwhelm

Busyness is something I have to really work on. I have some good practises in place that I learned from my occupational therapist and when I use them, I do pretty well. But I have this habit of a million things going around in my head and ending up so overwhelmed by it all that I struggle to get any of it done, in turn making it worse because everything piles up and up.

Sometimes, all it takes is just to write it all down, get it out of my head, and then actually doing a couple of the items rather than stressing over them. It seems so simple but I find this stupidly hard! Do you get this? I would love to hear what others do to deal with overwhelm? I think we live in a world where it’s fashionable to be too busy all the time!

Writing about MS

In other news, I want to tell you about my contributions to the Life Effects website by TEVA, a pharmaceutical company. The website is strictly for patients, by patients. I’m really proud of the articles I have written so far and very humbled that they contacted little old me in the first place.     Welcome back, Kat! Great news that you’re still relapse-free. We need to listen to our bodies more when we hear it saying we’re overdoing it, but it can get frustrating pacing when there’s so much to do. I do a lot of lists when I feel overwhelmed, but sometimes it makes it worse, so I try to break things down into really small things ‘to do’, actionable things, that make it feel more manageable. When there’s so much going on in your brain though it can be really hard to turn it down. A little distraction (something v.good on Netflix and something yummy to eat, if that holds you attention well enough) or a walk or long hot shower, anything to give your mind a little break can help. Congrats on the articles for the Life Effects site, you should be really proud! I’ll take a look-see now 🙂

      Thanks Caz! Some good tips there and yes, sometimes you need to remove yourself alltogether
